The main differences are how rates are set, whether a contract is required and the plan features available.

Direct Energy Regulated Services provides electricity and natural gas under Alberta’s regulated rate frameworks. No contract is required, and regulated providers serve as the default option for customers who have not chosen a competitive retailer.

Competitive retailers, such as Direct Energy, set their rates based on market conditions. Plans may include fixed or variable rates, different term lengths and additional features or incentives, such as bill credits or rewards.

An energy retailer purchases electricity or natural gas on behalf of customers and provides services such as billing and customer support.

Direct Energy Regulated Services provides energy under Alberta’s regulated rate frameworks, which are reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC).

Direct Energy offers competitive energy plans, including fixed-rate options designed to provide longer-term price protection.
