What is our Green Option?

To support renewable energy projects in Canada, we purchase certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)2 from Canadian solar, biomass, hydro and wind projects for our Green Option customers.

While the electricity that reaches your home is from a mix of different sources, buying RECs helps ensure more renewable energy is produced and added into Canada's energy supply.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) represent the environmental attributes of electricity generated from renewable sources. When renewable energy producers generate electricity and inject it into the grid, they earn RECs, which they can sell separately from the physical electricity. While the electricity that reaches your home comes from a mix of sources, purchasing RECs supports renewable energy by helping ensure more clean electricity is produced and added to Canada’s overall energy supply.

When you enroll in our Green Option, we match a portion of your electricity use, 25%, 50%, or 100% of 7,200 kilowatt-hours, by purchasing and retiring the corresponding amount of certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) annually, based on the Green Option selected. This represents the average yearly electricity usage of a residential customer in Alberta. You can add, reduce or remove your percentage of the Green Option at any time by calling 1-866-374-6299.

Yes, it's easy to cancel at any time and there is no cancellation fee. Simply give us a call and we'll remove the Green Option from your plan. We'll process your cancellation by the next business day and you'll see the changes on your Direct Energy bill within up to 2 billing cycles.

Not at all! With our Green Option, you can easily support renewable energy projects in Canada without having to install solar panels or special equipment.

1100% Green Option is $12/month for the term of the contract. This 100% Green Option offer includes a $25 Visa Prepaid Card that will be shipped within 60 days after the service start date and a Green Cashback Reward of $25 per year, per electricity site and is awarded as a bill credit only, on each anniversary of the Green Option start date as applicable.
