What you need to know

Every day, Direct Energy customers are helping support renewable energy across Canada—without changing how they use energy at home.

Through our Green Option1, we purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Canadian renewable sources, helping support demand for renewable energy and contribute to a more diverse energy mix

Together, our customers have already made a measurable impact—and Earth Month is a timely point to see what that looks like in action.

What is the Green Option?

The Green Option is a simple way to support renewable energy through your existing electricity plan.

When you choose it, we match your electricity use by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Canadian renewable energy projects like:

  • Wind
  • Solar
  • Hydro
  • Biomass

While your home receives electricity from a shared grid, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) represent renewable electricity that has been generated and added to the grid. When you choose the Green Option, RECs are used to match a portion of your electricity use based on your selected level.

In short: You keep your current setup—and still support renewable energy.

Why customers choose to invest in renewable energy projects

Customers choose the Green Option because it’s simple, flexible and impactful.

It allows them to:

  • Support renewable energy without installing equipment
  • Support renewable energy through their existing energy plan
  • Contribute to a more balanced energy mix in Canada
  • Take action in minutes—not months

For many Albertans, it’s an easy way to align every day green living habits and energy use with their values.

The impact we’ve created together (so far)

Direct Energy customers contribute to measurable environmental outcomes through participation in the Green Option program.

In 2025 alone, our Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) portfolio supported:2

  • 225,611 MWh of renewable electricity
  • Approximately 48,800 tonnes of CO₂e avoided (based on grid emission factors and REC volumes)

For illustrative purposes, that’s comparable to:

  • Growing over 813,000 tree seedlings for 10 years
  • Keeping approximately 2.4 million trash bags out of landfills
  • Avoiding the burning of over 108 million pounds of coal

These results reflect the collective contribution of customers choosing to support renewable energy through their everyday electricity use.

And as more customers choose Green Option, that impact continues to grow.

Over time, this growing participation has helped build sustained momentum toward a more diverse and lower-emissions energy mix in Canada.2

Why Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) matter

RECs play an important role in how renewable energy grows in Canada.

They help:

  • Support demand for renewable electricity
  • Advance investment in new renewable projects
  • Encourage diversification of Canada’s energy supply
  • Provide a way for customers to participate in supporting renewable energy

Think of RECs as a signal:

The more customers choose renewable support, the stronger the demand for renewable electricity generation becomes.

Earth Month: A moment to take action

Earth month (April), and Earth Day on April 22—is a meaningful reminder that small actions, taken together, create meaningful change.

For energy customers, that action doesn’t need to be complex.

The Green Option allows you to support renewable energy by matching your electricity use with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).1 These certificates represent renewable electricity generated from sources like wind, solar, and hydro that has been added to the grid.

No. The Green Option works through your existing electricity plan, so there’s no equipment, installation, or changes required in your home.

Seasonal demand can affect pricing. Winter often increases natural gas demand for heating, while summer can increase electricity demand due to air conditioning.

Yes. You can typically choose to match a portion (like 50%) or all (100%)1 of your electricity use with renewable energy through the Green Option.

Yes. The Green Option is available to eligible customers in Alberta and can be added to your electricity plan in just a few steps.

1When you enroll in our Green Option, we match a portion of your electricity use, 25%, 50%, or 100% of 7,200 kilowatt-hours, by purchasing and retiring the corresponding amount of certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) annually, based on the Green Option selected. This represents the average yearly electricity usage of a residential customer in Alberta. RECs are certified by ECOLOGO®. Green Option Terms and Conditions apply. Learn more about our Green Option here.

2Equivalencies are based on the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator and Tree Canada Carbon Calculator.

3100% Green Option is $12/month for the term of the contract. This 100% Green Option offer includes a $25 Visa Prepaid Card that will be shipped within 60 days after the service start date and a Green Cashback Reward of $25 per year, per electricity site and is awarded as a bill credit only, on each anniversary of the Green Option start date as applicable.

4Participation in the Green Option does not change the physical electricity delivered to your home. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) represent renewable electricity generated and supplied to the grid on your behalf.
