Affordable energy plans for retail stores in Alberta

How much energy do retail stores use?

In a typical retail building, lighting, cooling, and heating make up approximately 70 percent of the total energy usage. Retail stores use around 14.3 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity and 30.9 cubic feet of natural gas per square foot each year, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). In many cases, the amount of natural gas consumed by small commercial companies can surpass electricity consumption.

An average-sized 50,000-square-foot retail building may spend approximately $90,000 annually on energy. Power consumption is one of the highest operating costs for most retailers, so even a slight improvement in energy efficiency can save a great deal of money - especially if they have the right commerical energy plan for their business.

How can retailers improve energy efficiency?

Manging energy usage in your establishment doesn't have to be a costly project. Implementing common sense energy-saving solutions can yield significant results to your business's bottom line. Start by involving staff in energy savings initiatives to ensure best operational practices. For example, simple reminders to close exterior doors and turn off lights and equipment (e.g., computers, cash registers, non-refrgirated vending machines, etc.) when not in use are low-cost examples of reducing energy consumption.

Here are more ways that retail stores can reduce energy costs:

Lighting

In retail, lighting is critical in creating ambiance and making merchandise attractive to shoppers. High-quality lighting can reduce energy bills and drive higher sales; however, ensure your lighting displays are energy-efficient. Consider installing energy-efficient lighting instead of incandescent lights. Change to T8 Florescent bulbs/lamps, which use up to 50 percent less energy than older fluorescent types, or switch to LED lighting that lasts much longer than incandescent bulbs.

Also, take advantage of natural lighting when possible and invest in timers to manage where lighting is needed, if feasible.

HVAC maintenance and upgrades

There's no substitute for HVAC maintenance for energy savings. When your system is serviced regularly and kept in peak condition, it can help prevent expensive repairs and costly heating and cooling bills. Have your equipment inspected for clogged filters, leaky ducts, dirty coils, dusty vents, and worn-out parts that will hamper the optimal operation of your system.

Optimizing your HVAC system is another important component of retail energy management. Consider installing demand-controlled ventilation (DCV). DCVs measure occupancy levels in your store based on carbon dioxide in the HVAC return system and adjust ventilation accordingly, which can reduce equipment run-time and energy consumption.

Install sensors and smart controls

Smart controls and sensors are very effective in reducing retail energy costs. Install smart controls. Consider smart thermostats, which will allow you to operate your HVAC remotely, as well as automate the temperature as needed. Install occupancy sensors in areas that are only sometimes occupied, such as dressing rooms, restrooms and breakrooms.

Adding occupancy sensors to vending machines will cut power to vending machines after the space is empty for a specified time. These sensors can reduce energy use by 25 percent or more depending on location and usage patterns.
