A history shaped by Alberta’s energy market

Alberta was one of the first provinces in Canada to introduce a competitive energy market, creating more choice for customers and new opportunities for providers.  

Direct Energy has been part of that story from early on, helping Albertans navigate their options and make more informed decisions about how they power their homes and businesses. 

Key milestones in our story

1986

 

Direct Energy is founded as a competitive energy retailer, focused on giving customers more choice in how they buy energy.

Early 2000s

 

Direct Energy expands across North America—including the 2004 acquisition of ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric’s retail businesses in Alberta.

2021

 

Direct Energy becomes part of NRG Energy, expanding access to technology, innovation and energy solutions across North America. 

Today

 

Direct Energy serves 600,000+ customers across Alberta, with a continued focus on simplicity, transparency and customer choice.
