Refer a Friend Terms and Conditions
Direct Energy is pleased to offer the Refer a Friend Program to our customers. You are not required to participate, but if you decide to do so, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to the program’s Terms and Conditions. Participation in and use of the Direct Energy Refer a Friend program is subject to the following Terms and Conditions.
1.0 Participant Types
Referrers: A new customer who signs up using a unique referral code provided by a Referrer.
Referees: A new customer who signs up using a unique referral code provided by a Referrer.
Person: Any individual, corporation, partnership, or entity.
1.1 Participants in the Refer a Friend Program
Referrers
- Eligibility: Participants must be in good standing to be eligible to participate in the Program. To be considered in good standing, the Participant must have an active residential account with Direct Energy and be current on all payments. Direct Energy reserves the right to terminate a Participant’s participation in the Program or cancel the Program at any time for any reason or no reason, to the extent permitted by law, upon written notice to Participants.
Referees
- Eligibility: A qualified Referee must be a new customer who hasn’t had a Direct Energy plan in the last 12 months and meets the eligibility criteria for a new plan. Direct Energy reserves the right to terminate a Participant’s participation in the Program or cancel the Program at any time for any reason or no reason, to the extent permitted by law, upon written notice to Participants.
2.0 Qualified Referrals and Rewards. How it Works.
Referrers
- Refer someone who hasn’t been a Direct Energy customer in the last 12 months. If they sign up, both you and the Referee receive a $50 bill credit (“Refer a Friend Credit”).
- Direct Energy may change the amount Direct Energy is offering at any time prior to enrollment of a qualified referral without notice to you or your referrals.
- Your Referee must sign up using your referral link or code and meet the eligibility criteria for their selected energy plan. By providing the referral code, you consent to the Referee knowing your name.
- A Refer a Friend Reward is applied as a bill credit (“Refer a Friend Credit”) 60 days following the Referee’s plan start date. There is no bill credit if either account is canceled or in arrears before then. A Referrer can have an unlimited number of Referees.
- By participating in the Program, you agree that Direct Energy shall decide whether a person meets all requirements to be considered a qualified Referee.
- The Referrer will need to have an email address associated with their account that is valid, active, and accessible in order to receive Program related emails.
Referees
- Sign up using the referral link or code, and both you and the Referrer will receive a $50 bill credit (“Refer a Friend Credit”).

- The Referee will need to have an email address associated with their account that is valid, active, and accessible in order to receive Program related emails.
3.0 Sharing the Program
- Comply with Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation when sharing referral links. Do not send spam, pay for advertising, or use the link for commercial purposes. Sharing via social media must follow the platform’s terms of service. If you use Direct Energy’s email service, the Referee must be your friend or family member.
- Direct Energy may create promotional materials for the Program. You may share these as-is but must not alter them. Do not misrepresent your relationship with Direct Energy or use their trademarks.
- Disclose the Refer a Friend Reward benefit when sharing the Program.
4.0 Bill Credits
- Bill Credits are non-transferable, non-exchangeable, and cannot be combined with other programs. Bill Credits across multiple Direct Energy accounts cannot be merged.
- Direct Energy will resolve discrepancies in Refer a Friend Reward balances. Their decision is final. Bill Credits have no cash value.
- Only one referral code can be used by a Referee. The Referrer whose code is used will receive the Refer a Friend Reward.
5.0 Violations
Direct Energy may cancel your participation or any Refer a Friend Rewards if there’s illegal activity, fraud, or violations of these Terms and Conditions
6.0 General
- Precedence: These Terms and Conditions precede any conflicting promotional material.
- Termination: Direct Energy can suspend or terminate the Program or your participation at any time.
- Exclusions: The Program is not open to Direct Energy employees or contractors and cannot be combined with other offers. No substitutes will be provided if you’re ineligible.
- Updates: Terms and Conditions can be updated without notice. Continued participation means you accept the changes.
- Privacy: By participating, you consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information for Program administration. Third-party service providers, which may be outside Alberta or Canada, may access your information.
- Governing Law: These Terms and Conditions are governed by Alberta law. If any part is invalid, the rest remains enforceable.
