Supporting Camp Alexo for 3 years

In 1984, an old coal mining town between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House was converted into a youth summer camp called Camp Alexo. The camp is owned and operated by Youth HQ in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer and District and Boys & Girls Club of Red Deer and District.

For over 40 years, Camp Alexo has been providing underprivileged kids in the central Alberta area with an opportunity to experience the joy and unforgettable memories of going to summer camp. Campers who attend Camp Alexo benefit from a variety of new experiences, learn lifelong skills, discover new interests and make new friends. Camp Alexo offers a campership fund for kids that can’t afford the camp and they provide free transportation from Innisfail and Red Deer to ensure every kid has a ride to camp and back.

This year was Direct Energy Canada’s third time supporting Camp Alexo as we enjoy giving back and directing our energy towards an organization that genuinely cares about providing equal opportunities for young Albertans and positively impacting their lives through summer camp fun.

During our two-day trip, our employee team cleared small brush and trees growing within 6 feet of the camp entrance road to enable grater and snow plow maintenance in the winter. Our team also helped with campground restoration work such as sanding and painting the cabin decks as well as cleaning up the Eagles Nest Rotary Lodge. In addition to volunteering on site, Direct Energy Canada has donated $10,000 to Camp Alexo which will help 35 kids attend summer camp next year. The priceless added benefit of this trip was the team bonding and camaraderie during tasks, meals and around the campfire.

As Henry Kissinger once said, “a diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure.” Camp Alexo is certainly the diamond that came out of this coal mining town, thanks to the relentless efforts of their founding team, Youth HQ and camp facilitators. Camp Alexo continues to shine bright in our community and we are honored to support this amazing organization that makes us proud to be Albertan.
