Supporting Meals on Wheels in Calgary & Edmonton

This November, our parent company, NRG Energy, organized its 15th annual positiveNRG Week, which is a time when we come together to positively impact our local communities.

In 2021, NRG targeted giving and volunteer efforts towards local communities and causes where we could make a meaningful difference and were able to achieve the following impact:

  • Over $9.6 million in donations
  • 780+ non-profit organizations supported
  • $310,000 in employee-matched donations
  • 6,300+ volunteer hours across 180 charities
  • $4.2 million in cash donations and $53.5 million towards in-kind relief and customer assistance for winter storm recovery efforts

As the global hunger crisis continues to create far-reaching impacts on our local communities, this year’s volunteer and giving efforts were focused on strengthening food security for those in need. During positiveNRG Week, our Direct Energy Canada team volunteered at Edmonton Meals on Wheels on November 7 and Calgary Meals on Wheels on November 10, helping with meal prep and packing.

Why is Meals on Wheels an important cause to support in Alberta?

“When you’ve got a lot on your plate, let us do the cooking!” – Calgary Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels Volunteer Edmonton

Calgary Meals on Wheels  is a not-for-profit organization established in 1965 which promotes health and independence by providing quality, nutritious and affordable meals. They believe everyone deserves to be well-fed regardless of their age, ability, or life-circumstances.

Since 2000, Calgary Meals on Wheels has been delivering nutritious hot soup lunch twice a week to elementary schools with vulnerable students at no cost to the students or the schools. Calgary Meals on Wheels has also partnered with a variety of community organizations such as Alpha House, Calgary Police Service, and Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), to provide nutritious and affordable meals through their Group Meal Program.

Edmonton Meals on Wheels is a local non-profit and registered charitable organization that has been providing home-delivered meal and food services to a diverse mix of people since 1969.

Their motto is “FEEDING BODY AND SOUL®” as the service that Edmonton Meals on Wheels provides goes deeper than just food. They’ve found that the volunteers’ daily visits are equally as important as the food. Through Edmonton Meals on Wheels, food has become a means of breaking social isolation, nourishing community and building trusting relationships. Building friendships, sharing a story, and doing the “little extras” when asked are considered by many to be just as important as the delivery of great food. That’s how they feed both body and soul.
